National Smile Month

We are currently celebrating National Smile Month which is an annual event. The month began on Monday 17th May 2021 and continues through Thursday 17th June 2021.

You may have noticed on your child’s Tapestry account that we have been learning about our teeth. Some of our preschool children have even been using words such as decay, canines, molars and cavities! During this month, we highlight the importance of healthy teeth and promote oral hygiene. It is essential that from a young age that children’s gums and teeth are cared for and they are taught to brush their teeth at least twice a day for two minutes.

We teach children the effects that food and drinks can have on their teeth and how too much sugar can lead to decay. It is important that both children and adults have a balanced diet, which includes food/drinks which are rich in calcium support bone development. At Angels, the only drinks that we serve are water, milk or dairy alternatives. Children should also be using correct bottles/beakers suitable for their age and if they do have a dummy as comfort, we would strongly recommend limiting the use where possible.

We work together with Startwell Birmingham and our Oral Health character Smiley Shen to support our teaching. Take a look at their website for more information startwellbirmingham.co.uk/smiley-shen/

Did you know…

Children are also entitled to Free NHS dental care and they can visit from as young as 6 months. If we can encourage all parents to register their child with their local dentist, this will help them to have healthy teeth throughout their life time.
